Hey y'all!
It's again time to let you know what's going on here in Mississippi. Everything is still going great! Last week we had a week off from school, because of thanksgiving! Here we don't have a week off at the end of October like we do in Belgium, we have a week off at the end of the month november, beginning of december. So Thanksgiving, which was on the 28th of november, was very relaxing. One thing I can definitely tell you is that there was a ton of food! Really good dishes! Food that every American looks forward to the whole year! Sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, dressing, corn casserole, cranberry casserole, jello, asparagus casserole, pecan pie and of course the turkey with gravy! Thanksgiving is a family day of thanking your loved ones. It was started by the plymouth colony, a puritan colony and one of the first colonies in America. The settlers were thankful for a better harvest and the covenant with the indians. It's amazing how this day is all about thanking each other. We went to have lunch at Brad's parents and that's where we ate the most! Brad's brother and uncle were there too. His parents did a really good job on the food. After we ate we just sat down to let the food settle down. The turkey also makes you a little bit sleepy, so that's the time you just relax. Afterwards we went to Lacey's parents. There we didn't eat that much anymore. We just watched football. It wasn't just a football game. It was the Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss game. If you read my previous blog, you remember that I've been to a Mississippi State game and that means that I'm pulling for that college football team. Most of Lacey's family members were also pulling for MS State except for Janie, Lacey's sister. It was kind of funny, because MS State and Ole Miss are big rivals! After we got back from Lacey's parents I went to see the last two quarters of the game at our neighbors house with Brad. They were all Mississippi State fans too except for Compton, our next door neighbor. He was devastated, because we won!! It was a very tied game. The game even had to go in overtime, because the score of the four quarters ended up to be tied. So that was Thanksgiving. Now about the Christmas spirit, it's starts sooo much earlier! People in Belgium usually start decorating after Sinterklaas. Well here they start after Thanksgiving, but we started way before that and we even started watching Christmas movies in November. Also we have so many decorations outside! We have candy cans, frosty the snowman, reindeers, a slay,... Our cul de sac is the prettiest out of the whole neighborhood. Every house has so many outside decorations, so that at night there are so many pretty lights! Brad and the neighbors also decorated the entrance of the neighborhood. Inside the house we have a beautiful, tall christmas tree, reefs, stockings and other sorts of decorations. Then last but not least our Elf on the shelf! He returned from the north pole the day before Thanksgiving, like he does every year around this time of the year. His name is Mickey and he changes spots each night until after Christmas, when he will return back to the north pole. Every morning Jane Bradley and Beckam search for him and sometimes we find him in the craziest spots, but we can never touch him! If you touch him, he will lose his powers and he won't be able to return to the north pole. He sees and hears everything ! He reports to Santa if you've been good or bad ;). This wednesday we played dirty Santa with our church youth group. First we went to Meg's house to eat appetizers, then we went to Claire's house to eat the main course and after that we had dessert at Caroline's house. There we played the famous Christmas game. We had to bring a present. It could be silly or just normal. I had funny Harry Potter glasses, so obviously it was a silly present. First we had to pull a number and I was one of the first ones to pick out a present from under the Christmas tree. I had an iTunes gift card! So that was a good one, but people can choose whether they pick out a present or steal one from somebody else! The person whose present got stolen can go pick out a new present. Of course mine got stolen and my second present was a lot of gift cards that had only one dollar on it! Thanks to Claire :). It was a fun game! So hopefully this blog makes you know a bit more about American Thanksgiving and Christmas spirit. xoxo Suzanna
