Scroll down for English. My friend called and I told her I was struggling. She picked me up. We sat, and I struggled through the whole beginning. And then I was able to smile. We were able to talk about other things. I felt my heart start to keep going. I will keep going. The Lord already knows every day I will have. Truly He gives us one day at a time. So, I will praise Him. And keep on praising Him. And I will praise Him for the gift of Megan. I have to tell my children that I have brain cancer. How do I even begin? I was so unsure. I opened my Bible and I had planned to read Psalm 37 but I meditated accidentally on Psalm 31. What an amazing gift it was.” This is the psalm Jesus quotes on the cross, “Into your hand I commit my spirit…” Verse 7-8 was like medicine to me, “I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.” (zie vertaling verzen in afbeelding) Ze eindigt diezelfde alinea met de volgende vaststelling: “My tumor may be in a hand shape, but that is not the hand I am in.” Lacey eindigt haar getuigenis met het volgende advies: “No matter your circumstances; no matter the level or the dailyness of your hard situation. No matter what. Know this. The Lord knows every part of it. He goes with you. You won’t go one step of it by yourself. There is nowhere he doesn’t go. Even Here.” Even here. Zelfs hier in deze coronatijden.
How much longer?
Growing up, we mostly drove to our holiday destinations. Affordable flights were a rare thing. In the summer, we drove to my family in Romania, and in the winters we went to the French Alps. For me and my sister, the car trips equaled playing games for hours. Every now and then, we would ask our parents; "How much longer?". A question that we may all ask ourselves during these corona times. When will everything be back to normal? When will the scientists have finished developing a vaccine? When will we be able to control the virus? Finding the answers to these questions is beyond our control, but of course we hope that everything will be more or less normal soon. I am also looking forward to the day when I can visit my family abroad. When we look at how the world responds to the corona crisis, we realize that the world as we knew it will never be the same again. Some might, therefore, be nostalgic, while others couldn’t care less. I, myself, realize all the more that we should not look for earthly comfort and wealth, since it is so temporary. Corona or no Corona, we quickly forget that people all over the world have been suffering from cancer for years, have been oppressed by a dictatorial regime their entire lives, are fighting poverty every day, or are victims of human trafficking, etc. while in my everyday life everything seems to be under control. In October 2018 I visited my American host mother who has been suffering from Glioblastoma, the most aggressive brain tumor (grade 4), for more than 3 years now. Before the diagnosis in April 2017, the malignant tumor had already spread over a large part of her brain, appearing in the form of a five-centimeter-large hand. That same month she had an emergency surgery so that some part of the tumor could be removed. After the successful operation, the doctors gave her 2-3 years. In recent months, Lacey has been experiencing worse symptoms, but nevertheless she honors God and testifies all the more about His love. Below, you can read one of her posts on the Love for Lacey-FB page (https://www.facebook.com/LoveforLacey/), just hours after she lost her good friend Megan to cancer (12/18/2019) : “My friend called and I told her I was struggling. Even Here ❤ Lacey is determined not to give up because the Lord knows our days on this earth. She wants to praise Him every day and thank Him as if it were her last day. Her faith and perseverance in spite of everything are a lesson. During my visit in 2018, I was touched by what she shared with me: “the world is temporary, whether we are sick or not; give your 100% today, because even if you have many future plans, tomorrow is not a promise. ” However, Jesus does promise us the following (Matthew 5:3-10): “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus died for our sins on the cross and promises us eternal life as children of our Heavenly Father where there is no injustice or sickness. We need only have faith in Him (John 3:16). “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”, Jesus tells his disciples in the next chapter (Matthew 6: 19-21). What are your priorities, what do you value most? That what is temporary or that what is eternal? In November 2018, Lacey shared her testimony at a Christian women’s conference. During my visit, I was allowed to read it and help shorten it. I read about how the Bible and prayer helped her deal with the bad news in April 2017: “I have to tell my children that I have brain cancer. How do I even begin? I was so unsure. I opened my Bible and I had planned to read Psalm 37 but I meditated accidentally on Psalm 31. What an amazing gift it was.” This is the psalm Jesus quotes on the cross, “Into your hand I commit my spirit…” Verse 7-8 was like medicine to me, “I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul, and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.” She ends the same paragraph with the following statement: "My tumor may be in a hand shape, but that is not the hand I am in." Although Lacey's tumor is in the shape of a hand, it is not the hand that is holding her. God's hand holds her and she entrusts her life to Him. Lacey ends her testimony with the following advice: “No matter your circumstances; no matter the level or the dailyness of your hard situation. No matter what. Know this. The Lord knows every part of it. He goes with you. You won’t go one step of it by yourself. There is nowhere he doesn’t go. Even Here.” So I'd rather ask myself the following question: "How much longer, oh Jesus, until you come back?" While I wait for the second coming of Jesus, also called the last judgment, I want to praise God with gratitude and surrender to Him, for better or for worse. I want to place less and less value on the treasures of this earth and instead receive His daily grace in my walk with Jesus. My wish is that His grace will make my heart go out to the things for which God's heart breaks; God's heart breaks for you and me and for this broken world. He knows you so well, the good and the bad parts, and does not want you to walk this life without His presence. Do you want to get to know Him? I can assure you that there is no better life than living and trusting in His Eternal Love. Even here. Even here in these Corona times.
